Monterey (The Other Bay Area)

In celebration of my dad's 64th birthday, we took a short trip to Monterey Bay. With Linus in Sweden we were able to carpool with Uncle Alvin and Lucy.
Our first stop was to pick strawberries at Gizidich Ranch.  Those who know me well understand my obsession with fruit picking, so I couldn't resist. It was Magnus and Anders' first time picking strawberries, and they couldn't be more delighted.

Mattias who is typically anti-fruit picking, was more than happy to rummage through the low plants for the tiniest, sweetest berries.  He credits the cool coastal fog and the fact that we can't find berries this sweet and tasty at the store.
Stawberries and chilled wine on the ready, we checked in to our hotel and went straight to the pool.
That evening we walked down to a very special place of my youth, the Monterey Municipal Pier.  My dad and I used to fish for crab, smelt, and mackerel there regularly.  That is, before I reached my tween I'm-too-cool-for-fishing phase. We ate at a seafood restaurant with views of the marina in hopes of spotting marine mammals.
The next day Uncle Alvin came with us to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  The last time we visited, Anders was just a wee infant.
There was a fantastic exhibit on cephalopods (Octopuses, Squid, and Cuttlefish) that we all enjoyed.
The boys enjoyed the tidal zone, imagining they lived with the fish.  We all marveled at how lucky we are to live so close to such natural treasures, and how a quick weekend left us all feeling refreshed. This area is not the easiest place to live, but with family and nature all around us, it's the best place for us to live.
