We have spent the last 9 weeks trying to keep up with the rapid growth of Magnus' head. Literally. At just 18 days old, Magnus had his first appointment with his ocularist to get fitted for his first ocular prosthetic, called a scleral shell. Think of it as a really thick contact lens that fits over his little eye, that helps the orbit expand as his head grows.

It mainly contained older ocular prosthetics, but there were also old advertisements from ocularists from the turn of the century. My favorite is the prosthetic made for a show horse!
A lot of people ask "Does it hurt?" While it may by uncomfortable during insertion and removal, he is quite calm and unbothered shortly after the fitting. Here he is chilling after a diaper change on the floor of the exam room.
What's really amazing to us is the transformation in his face. When he was first born you couldn't even see his eyelashes, and now his left eye opens up a good deal.

While these appointments can be traumatizing and scary for some parents, both Mattias and I love them. Not only is Mr. Hughes a wonderful person, but each visit is a step in a positive direction, an act that ensures normal development in our growing little boy.

Look at him little adorable Magnus! He is only 9 weeks and already so aware of his world. When you look at Linus' newborn picture to the left, I don't have enough words to describe the warm and cozy feeling when seeing little boy number 2 looking just like him! We now have two wonderful little Karlsson boys! Can't wait till cousins Sara and Anton come here so they all get to be with each other

ReplyDeleteOh Ellie! He is such a doll! Look in the mail for a little something for him that I have had for weeks and weeks but just couldn't drag myself to the post office after work to send it out. ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear that Magnus is doing well! I'm surprised that the prosthetic doesn't bother him, but cold butt wipes do. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is just the most handsome adorable little baby boy ever. I may have to bribe you with more muffins so I can come hold him again soon!
ReplyDeleteThat is one cute little guy! Glad to hear the adjustment is going well and that eveyrone is taking it in stride. Hope to see that little cutie in person sometime soon.
