We're Halfway There (Linus Turns 9)

Having a summer birthday can be a real bummer-- no in-class party, fewer friends to celebrate with.  But our boy Linus consistently chooses a smaller celebration at home or the cabin, rather than a class party.  This year we head to the cabin for a combination birthday & midsummer celebration.  For his birthday he wanted an emoji themed party.
The weekend was full of Nerf wars, catching up, and bumming around the (but not it) the raging waters of the American river.
The piƱata had a few technical difficulties but did its job in providing candy/toys, creating chaos, and making someone cry.  Someone always cries.
This year Whole Foods came to the rescue, making an impressive emoji cake.
That evening we busted out the Aquavit and pickled herring (and other traditional Midsummer foods) to celebrate the summer solstice.
Linus' actual birthday was spent at home with the grandparents, since both Mattias and I had to work.  We started the day with fine pastries (Linus' choice) and a few gifts. In the evening we took him to his favorite sushi restaurant.

I tease Linus, telling him he's halfway to moving out, halfway to adulthood.  I'm in no rush for him to grow up, rather, I feel pride and relief that he's turning out to be such a fine boy.  That later on, his caring for others, his attention to detail, and his zest for life will make him a very fine young man.

Mother's Day, My Way

Instead of relaxing at home with breakfast in bed, I dragged the family out bright and early to go cherry picking in Brentwood.  A big part of me knew I wouldn't get a peaceful experience at home, another part of me just really wanted fresh cherries.

The boys, including Mattias and Teddy, happily picked and ate cherries by the handful.  The abundant rain made for an amazing harvest this year.

Despite the early start and long drive, Magnus proclaimed this "The best mothers day ever!"   I agreed.
