I was sore from the Rugged Maniac race, so we took it easy the following day. I'm not a homebody or much of a rester, so easy meant a walking tour around a never-before-explored San Francisco neighborhood: Bernal Heights. A hilly neighborhood surrounding open parkland on Bernal Heights Summit, visitors can enjoy sunshine, views, and lots of trails to explore. Anders insisted on wearing his astronaut suit.
One of the highlights for the boys was this tree swing, built by residents in the open park area.
After a walk around the mountain we found 331 Cortland Ave., which houses 3 distinct and tasty food vendors. While Mattias and I noshed on a reuben, the boys ate their piroshki in the windowsill and watched passersby.
On the long walk back to the car we met neighborhood residents, imagined a life in such a peaceful and beautiful neighborhood, and walked along the narrowest sidewalk we've ever seen.
After a quick nap we crossed the bay to Golden Gate Fields for an evening of horse racing. Sundays feature $1 hot dogs, beers, and sodas. It's a real classy crowd (not really) but what matters most is that everyone is having a good time.
We let the kids help us choose which horses to bet on, and taught them the basics of betting to show, place, or for the win. Linus ended up picking some winners, netting us about $30 (he got a $5 commission). Wittiest bet went to Mattias, who won $20 on "Studhammer, for the win."
